Railports Carex

EURO CAREX : Cargo Rail Express

Results › Figures

The data communicated below result from studies carried out by the Carex entities and are informational data. These are estimates that must be supplemented and that are currently undergoing significant updating. These data will soon be consolidated for the establishment of the general Euro Carex business plan.

Average cost per container carried

Reference aircraft container: AMJ

  • roughly 450 per container carried over the first phase of the network
  • roughly 370 per container carried in 2021

Volumes identified

Roissy Carex
Beginning in 2012, estimates concern 270,000 containers, representing 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes of freight per year. With the development of the Euro Carex service and the number of sites served, volumes will reach 365,000 containers. This concerns flows between Roissy-CDG and other Carex Railports determined by clients/shippers involved and expressed in equivalent AMJ type aircraft containers. They concern express airfreight and cargo currently carried by aircraft or truck and eligible for Carex railway service (Source: Elcimaï/Sigma Business Plan for Roissy Carex - 2008)

Lyon Carex
The great majority of flows identified concerns exchanges with Roissy-CDG, representing 321 tonnes per day in 2015 and 383 in 2020. For other connections, the potential volume will be limited in the startup phase.

Amsterdam Carex
The potential volumes eligible for carriage by high speed train go from 90,000 tonnes per year at the theoretical date of placement into service in 2012 to over 260,000 tonnes in 2020. In this last case, half the flows are generated on the Amsterdam-London and Amsterdam-Milan lines, a site added in the 3rd phase of service. It should be noted that there will be no modal carryover of flows with Germany as there is no direct and rapid railway link between Amsterdam and Cologne / Frankfurt, contrary to the road. Furthermore, the flows determined include pure road freight (perishable goods, in particular).

Liege Carex
Potential volumes will total roughly 82,000 AMJ containers when service starts up. France is Belgium's leading partner for goods transport. (Source: Ernst & Young market study for Liege Carex - 2007)

London Carex
According to the analyses of flows carried out since 2006, it is the major site in terms of Euro Carex network volumes. A supplemental market study is currently in progress.

Main Investments

Carex trains
The cost of construction of 20 high speed trains varies between 600 and 700 M according to the manufacturer and options selected. These proposals include development costs and fixed costs but do not incorporate the maintenance costs that will be covered by a specific contract with the designated manufacturer (see below).

Railway branch (or connecting) lines
The unit cost will depend on their length and complexity. It varies from €10 to over 100 M depending on the site.

Carex "Railport" terminals.
According to initial studies, the cost of a basic terminal was estimated at 15 M, including the land acquisitions, building, two channels 235 m long, integrated facilities, ancillary facilities (including security and surveillance equipment in particular) and the necessary road development. But not all the terminals will have to handle the same traffic volumes. Some will thus be sized with one channel and others may have four 400 m in length for handling double trains. This will be the case of the Roissy Carex Railport. The choice of loading mode (automatic/conventional) will also impact size and design and affect cost as will the earthmoving work that may prove necessary.

Estimation and Allocation of Expenses

Allocation of Euro Carex Expenses

Estimation of annual expenses
calculated on the basis of flows between Roissy and the other Carex Railports.

  • €124.6M in 2012, with the first phase network
  • Of which €86 M for rolling stock, train maintenance, driving, energy, grooves, branch line maintenance
  • €152.0 M in 2021
